Hon. Alan J. Meyer

Judge MeyerAlan J. Meyer, Supervising Judge of the Criminal Court in Richmond County, was born in New York City and grew up in Washington Heights. He received his B.A. from Long Island University and his J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law in 1972.

He served as a Substitute Teacher for the New York City Board of Education before becoming a member of the Legal Aid Society, where he worked as a Criminal Defense Attorney from 1972 to 1976.

Judge Meyer then joined the Richmond County District Attorney’s office, where he was a Supreme Court Trial Assistant from 1976 to 1980. He became Chief of the Criminal Court Bureau in 1980. In 1983, he was appointed to the Criminal Court bench by Mayor Edward I. Koch. He was reappointed in 1992 by Mayor David Dinkins and, again, in 2002 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Judge Meyer was appointed as an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court by then Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman in 1989 and continues to hold that designation.

He served as Deputy Supervising Judge for the Criminal Court in both Kings and Richmond County from 2000 until 2009. He has also been the Presiding Judge of the Staten Island Treatment Court from 1999 until the present.

Judge Meyer was appointed Supervising Judge of the Criminal Court in Richmond County by Chief Adminstrative Judge Ann Pfau in 2009.

The Judge resides in Staten Island with his wife Susan. He is the proud father of two daughters and the grandfather of two grandchildren.
