Hon. Martin E. Smith was elected Broome County Court Judge in November, 1990 and re-elected in 2000 and 2010. His chambers are in Binghamton.

Judge Smith was appointed Supervising Judge of the Criminal Courts of the Sixth Judicial District in 2007.

He was appointed by then-Chief Judge Judith Kaye to The Jury Project in 2003 and the Commission on the Future of Indigent Defense Services in 2004. He is a frequent lecturer at Judicial seminars and continuing legal education programs for Bar Associations on criminal law and trial practice.

Judge Smith graduated from Niagara University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his Juris Doctor degree from Syracuse University College of Law in 1970. He served as an Assistant District Attorney with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office from 1970 to 1975, rising to Deputy Chief of the Frauds Bureau. He was Senior Assistant District Attorney in the Broome County District Attorney's Office from 1975 to 1977 and then entered private practice in Binghamton as a partner with the law firm of Palmer, Hankin, Peyton and Smith. From 1985 to 1990, Judge Smith was a partner in the firm of Griffen and Smith. He was an Adjunct Professor at Binghamton University (then State University of New York at Binghamton), from 1977 to 1988, delivering courses in criminal law.

Judge Smith is married to Mary Kleinhans Smith and they have four children, Christopher Corey, Rebecca, Melissa and Matthew.
