Administrative Directory - Supervising Judges - NYC

Hon. Philip Straniere

Judge Straniere was elected to the Civil Court in November 1996 from the 2nd Civil Court District on Staten Island and currently is one of only two Republicans to be elected to that court.

In 2004, he was named an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court and is the Supervising Judge of the Civil Court Richmond County. He received his JD degree from New York University School of Law and his BA (Magna Cum Laude) and MA in history from Wagner College on Staten Island.

Prior to going on the bench he was in private practice for over 20 years. Judge Straniere is currently an adjunct assistant professor at St John’s University. He also taught full time at St. John’s University in the College of Business Administration before becoming a judge and served as an administrative law judge for the New York City Board of Education Impartial Hearing Office, the Taxi and Limousine Commission, Parking Violations Bureau and the Environmental Control Board. In 2002 his colleagues elected him to serve as President of the Board of Judges of the Civil Court. Unable to fulfill his childhood dreams of playing center field for the New York Yankees (couldn’t hit the curve ball) or starring in a Broadway musical (couldn’t tap as fast as Ann Miller), he is attempting to achieve his parents’ expectations of him to make the world a better place when you leave it than when you found it, by serving the public as a judge.

Judge Straniere is a native Staten Islander who graduated from Curtis High School.

He is married to Jennifer and has three children, Gregory, Amanda and Nicholas.
