FAQ's

1. When will the NYS Court Officer-Trainee Examination be administered? Examination 45-758 will be administered on Saturday, October 24, 2009 and Saturday, December 12, 2009. Candidates will be assigned and scheduled for only one of these dates.

2. When can I apply to take the NYS Court Officer-Trainee Examination? The filing period for Court Officer-Trainee Examination 45-758 closed July 31, 2009. We are no longer accepting applications for this examination which will be held statewide on October 24, 2009 and December 12, 2009.

3. When will I receive an Admission Notice? Admission Notices for both examination dates will be mailed in early October. Applicants who have not received an Admission Notice for either examination date by October 16, 2009 should email the Office of Court Administration at coexams@courts.state.ny.us. Due to the high volume of applications, applicants for the examination will not receive confirmation that their applications were received.

4. I changed my mailing address. Who do I notify?Applicants who have changed mailing addresses should email their new information to coexams@courts.state.ny.us.

5. What if I require special accommodations to take the examination? Applicants should contact the Coordinator of Special Accommodations by August 28, 2009 at coexams@courts.state.ny.us. Documentation regarding the nature and extent of the special need will be required as part of the accommodation process.

6. Will I receive a confirmation that my application was received? Due to the high volume of applications, you will not receive a confirmation. An Admission Notice will be mailed in early October. If you have not received an Admission Notice for the October 24 or December 12 examination date by October 16, 2009, follow the instructions on page nine in the Examination Announcement Job Orientation Guide.

7. Where will the NYS Court Officer-Trainee Examination be administered? The examination will be administered throughout New York State. You will be assigned to one of the 19 test centers. The test centers are listed on the examination application.

8. How much time will I need to spend at the test center? Plan to spend at least four hours at the test center. This includes the time allocated for registration and testing.

9. When will I be notified of my examination results? Examination results will be mailed four to six months following the administration of the examination.

10. Can you recommend a study guide or course? The Office of Court Administration does not recommend any commercial study guides or courses. However, sample examination questions and examination preparation suggestions are available in the Examination Announcement Job Orientation Guide.

11. Do I need to take the examination if I passed the NYS Court Officer-Trainee Examination 45-722 administered in 2005, but have not been appointed from the hiring list? It is anticipated that new eligible list 45-758 will be established in Spring 2010. List 45-722 is due to expire no earlier than July 2010 and will be used until a sufficient number of NYS Court Officer-Trainee candidates have been cleared for appointment from the new list. Candidates remaining on list 45-722 will not be transferred to list 45-758.

12. Can I get an idea where I stand on list 45-722? As of early December 2009, the following ranks and scores have been reached:

13. How long will the new eligible list 45-758 be valid? An eligible list for NYS Court Officer-Trainee is generally valid for four years, and can be extended for one additional year, at which time a new examination is held and a new list established.

14. If I pass the examination, am I guaranteed a job? Depending upon the needs of the courts throughout New York State, candidates are notified from the eligible list based upon their written examination score and rank number. There is no guarantee a particular rank will be reached. Prior to appointment as a NYS Court Officer-Trainee, candidates must successfully complete the following seven assessments:

• Pre-screening Medical
• Full Medical
• Physical Ability Exam
• Background Investigation
• Psychological Assessment
• Evaluation Board Review
• Pre-appointment Medical

15. What qualifications must I have to be appointed as a NYS Court Officer-Trainee? The minimum qualifications at the time of appointment include:

• be at least 18 years old
• possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
• be a United States Citizen
• be a New York State Resident

16. Must I be at least 18 years old to take the NYS Court Officer-Trainee Examination? You must be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment.

17. What is the salary of a NYS Court Officer-Trainee? As of April 1, 2010, the anticipated hiring rate is $39,771. Appointees in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland and Westchester Counties will receive $3,697 in annual location pay. Appointees in Dutchess, Orange and Putnam Counties will receive $1,848 in annual location pay. There is also an annual uniform allowance. After satisfactory completion of a two-year trainee program, the anticipated pay rate increases to $49,777 as of April 1, 2010.

18. I believe I am entitled to Veterans Credits. What paperwork do I need to send? Veterans who have indicated on their application that they are eligible to receive Veterans Credits toward their scores will receive a letter from the Office of Court Administration during Fall 2009 informing them of additional steps required to be considered for Veterans Credits. The Veteran’s Letter may be downloaded for those veterans who wish to submit documentation early.

19. I am in the military and will be deployed during the examination dates. What should I do? Military personnel who anticipate being deployed during the examination dates must contact the Office of Court Administration at coexams@courts.state.ny.us prior to the examination.
