Domestic Violence Court
Legal Aid Society
The Legal Aid Society provides counsel in the Criminal and Family Court matters
to persons who, in the opinion of the Court, are financially unable to afford
private counsel.
The Criminal Division is the largest component of the Legal
Aid Society, and has attorneys assigned to all the District
and County Court Parts where defendants are represented from
arraignment through trial or other disposition. The Appeals
Bureau also represents defendants in cases which are assigned
directly by the Appellate Division. In addition, the Legal Aid
Society also has separate Family Court and Children's Law Bureau
Divisions. The Family Court Division represents adults in family
offense cases, visitation, foster care, child abuse, paternity,
adoptions and related matters. The Children's Law Bureau Division
provides representation for children in PINS (persons alleged
to be in need of supervision), guardianship, custody and family
offense proceedings.
Each division of the Legal Aid Society provides for investigative services,
and other services necessary to provide adequate representation and defense
of it's clients.
