Biography of Justice Charles E. Ramos

Hon. Charles E. Ramos. A graduate of New York University and Fordham Law School, Justice Charles E. Ramos was in private practice before becoming a Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York in 1983. From 1988 through 1993, Justice Ramos served as an Acting Supreme Court Justice and Presiding Judge of the Civil Court in New York County. Justice Ramos was elected to the Supreme Court in 1993. He has served as a Commercial Division Justice in New York County since 1996 and is presently the Senior Justice of the Commercial Division.

As a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York Justice Ramos has served on its Committee on Professional Discipline; the Committee to Report on Proposals for Revisions of ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct (Ethics 2000); the Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics; its Nominating Committee and the Executive Committee.

As a member of the New York State Bar Association he has served as Chair of the Judicial Section and as a member of the House of Delegates.

Justice Ramos is a Founding Member of the Association of Judges of Hispanic Heritage and has been presiding Member of the New York State Council of Judicial Associations. He has lectured for the Practical Legal Education Program, the New York State Courts Judicial Seminar, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, New York County Lawyers Association, Puerto Rican Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, and the Fund for Modern Courts. He was a member of the New York City Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution and acts as a Sponsor/resource for the Board of Education's City-As-School Program.

As Supervising Judge, he established the first Anti Bias Committee for the Civil Court.

He also serves as a Member, Board of Directors, Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert.

His recent Awards include the Fuld Award from the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section, of the New York State Bar Association and was named as one of the 500 leading judges in America." Lawdragon Magazine.
