Home Chief Clerk and Legal Counsel to the Court
John Asiello - Clerk of the Court John P. Asiello was appointed Clerk of the New York State Court of Appeals on September 17, 2015. In that position, he oversees the daily operation of the Court and its Staff. He was born in Corning, New York, in October 1952. He received his B.A., with outstanding academic performance, Phi Beta Kappa, from Harpur College, State University of New York at Binghamton, in 1974; and his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1977. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1978. From 1977 to 1981, he was a staff attorney in the Clerk's Office of the New York State Court of Appeals.
Between 1981 and 1985, he was in private practice as an associate at Bouck, Holloway, Kiernan and Casey in Albany. He returned to the Court of Appeals in 1985, and before becoming Clerk of the Court, served in several positions, including Chief Motion Clerk, Assistant Consultation Clerk, Consultation Clerk, and Deputy Clerk. He and his wife, Carol, reside in Latham, New York. They have two children.

Special mention should be made of the Court of Appeals Staff, who provide excellent support to the Court. They, along with the Judges' personal law clerks and secretaries, keep New York State's highest tribunal functioning twelve months a year. The dedication and commitment of the entire Court Staff are "evident in the maintenance of Court of Appeals Hall, in dealing with the bar and public, and in innumerable other essential steps in the consideration and resolution of matters before the Court."

- former Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye (Foreword to Court of Appeals 1993 Annual Report)
