| New York's Courts are diverse in character and geography. There are Justice Courts in towns and villages where lay judges dispense simple justice. City Courts, County Courts, Family Courts and Surrogates Courts are spread throughout the State's cities and 62 counties. There are also Courts of Claim (for suits against the State). In addition, there is an elaborate appellate structure where the complexities of ever-developing jurisprudence are honed and refined. The spirit of the laws continues to provide a framework for civilized discourse and behavior. Our collection of court photographs and histories encompasses both past and present court houses, local courts and appellate facilities. A special section contains commemorative anniversary pamphlets from the Appellate Divisions and the Court of Appeals as well as a profile of the Fulton County Court, the oldest active court house in the state. | Court Houses of New York
