|Hon. Douglas McKeon Appointed Presiding Justice of Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the First Judicial Department|
NEW YORK - Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman today announced, with the approval of Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, Hon. John T. Buckley, the appointment of Justice Douglas E. McKeon as Presiding Justice of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the First Judicial Department. The court has jurisdiction over appeals from the New York City Criminal and Civil Courts.
“Justice McKeon has both keen intellect and the invaluable experience of a well respected jurist who has had many productive years on the bench,” said Judge Lippman. “I am confident that as Presiding Judge of the Appellate Term court, Justice McKeon will bring only credit to the court, and I thank him for accepting the responsibilities of this critical judicial assignment.”
Judge Buckley stated further, “I am very pleased that Justice McKeon has agreed to serving in this important leadership position on the Appellate Term. I have no doubt that he will contribute greatly to the court in his new role.”
Hon. Douglas McKeon has been a Supreme Court Justice in the Bronx since 1990. Prior to that, he served as a Judge on the Civil Court of the City of New York. After receiving his Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School, Judge McKeon served as a law clerk to two United States District Court judges for the Southern District of New York. He was in the private practice of law with a specialization in trial and appellate practice, and served as Associate Counsel to the Speaker of the New York State Assembly, as well as a member of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. Justice McKeon has been honored for his judicial excellence by the Jewish Lawyers Guild, the Brehon Law Society and The Defense Association of New York. He has lectured throughout New York and other states at legal seminars and authored several articles in legal publications. Justice McKeon is an honorably discharged veteran from the United States Army Reserve National Guard.
In his new position, he replaces Hon. Lucindo Suarez, who was recently named Statewide Coordinating Judge for Summary Jury Trials. The appointment takes effect immediately.
