Hon. George D. Marlow Appointed to Newly Created Position of Statewide Judicial Director of Ethics Education and Counsel

NEW YORK – Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau today announced the appointment of Hon. George D. Marlow to the newly created position of Statewide Judicial Director of Ethics Education and Counsel. The appointment was made with the approval of Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye. Effective February 1, 2008, Justice Marlow will be leaving the Appellate Division, First Department, and returning to the Supreme Court trial bench in Dutchess County.

“Justice Marlow’s four decades of legal and judicial experience and his demonstrated commitment to legal and judicial ethics and professional responsibility make him the ideal candidate for this important new position,” said Judge Pfau. “For 20 years he has been a member, and is currently Chair, of the New York State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics – a role he has maintained even while meeting the rigorous demands of sitting as Associate Justice of the Appellate Division. His excellent reputation, commitment to quality and strong work ethic are unsurpassed. I welcome Justice Marlow to his new position, in which he will be an invaluable resource to New York’s judges.”

Hon. Jonathan Lippman, Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, said, “I want to thank Justice Marlow for his many years of dedicated and distinguished service to this court. His keen intellect and scholarship have garnered him the respect and admiration of his colleagues, and helped make the First Department one of the preeminent appellate courts in the nation. I wish him the best as he returns to the trial court and takes on the new and challenging position of Statewide Judicial Director of Ethics Education and Counsel. I am confident he will continue to make enormous contributions to the court system in both roles.”

As Statewide Judicial Director of Ethics Education and Counsel, Justice Marlow will oversee judicial ethics training across the state for both state-paid judges and town and village justices. He will also play an integral role in the ethics training of non-judicial employees of the Unified Court System. In this new role, Justice Marlow will work closely with the New York State Judicial Institute. He will also continue to serve as Chair of the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics, along with handling his responsibilities in the Dutchess County Supreme Court.

Hon. George D. Marlow was appointed an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, in 2001. He was elected to the Supreme Court in the 9th District in 1999; to the Dutchess County Court in 1992 and Family Court in 1983; and to the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court in 1979. Justice Marlow is a former Co-chair of the Capital Case Judicial Training and Resource Committee. He was appointed by Chief Judge Kaye to serve on the Commission on Fiduciary Appointments and the Committee to Foster Confidence in the Judicial Election Process. Formerly, he served as an assistant district attorney in Queens and then Dutchess County. Judge Albert M. Rosenblatt appointed him as his first law clerk in 1976 and he was a founding partner in the Poughkeepsie law firm now known as Gellert & Klein, P. C. Judge Marlow received his law degree from St. John’s University.
