Hon. Michael Coccoma Named Administrative Judge of Sixth Judicial District

NEW YORK – Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau today announced the appointment of Hon. Michael Coccoma as Administrative Judge of the Sixth Judicial District. The appointment was made with the approval of Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye and in consultation with Hon. Anthony V. Cardona, the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Third Department. Judge Coccoma succeeds Justice Judith O’Shea, who has announced she is stepping down to return to the Supreme Court trial bench.

“Justice Coccoma is a longstanding, highly regarded member of the Otsego County legal community, admired and respected for his work ethic and his unflagging energy and focus,” said Judge Pfau. “He has intimate knowledge of the court system, having served as a judge in the County, Family and Surrogate’s Courts; as Presiding Judge of the Drug Treatment Court; and as a Supreme Court justice. His diligence, adaptability and dedication to justice will be a tremendous asset to the courts of the Sixth District and the public they serve. Judge Coccoma will bring to his new assignment the resourcefulness and commitment to quality which have marked his judicial career."

Judge Coccoma received his bachelor’s degree from The Citadel. Upon earning his Juris Doctor from Albany Law School, he entered private practice before serving as an Otsego County Attorney; Assistant District Attorney; and District Attorney. In 1995, Judge Coccoma was elected as a multi-bench judge of County Court, Family Court and Surrogate’s Court in Otsego County. Five years after his initial ascension to the bench, Judge Coccoma was appointed Presiding Judge of the then newly-created Otsego County Drug Treatment Court. He has been an Acting Supreme Court Justice since 2000, and was elected to the Supreme Court in January 2008. Judge Coccoma is a member of the New York State Matrimonial Commission; Law Guardian Advisory and Rules Committee, Appellate Division, Third Department; Otsego County Children’s Center Committee; and Family Court Advisory and Rules Committee.

In addition to his new administrative duties, Judge Coccoma will continue to preside over Supreme Court matters in Otsego and other counties and maintain his chambers in Cooperstown.

Judge Pfau added, “It is impossible to overstate the contributions Judge O’Shea has made to the court system in her eight years as Administrative Judge of the Sixth District. In that position – and in all of her near 30 years on the bench – she has shown herself to be an exceptional leader, jurist and administrator. Her wealth of legal knowledge and tireless dedication have set the standard for her successors. We owe her a debt of gratitude for her exceptional service – past, present and moving forward.”

The appointment is effective immediately.
