|Hon. Douglas McKeon Appointed Administrative Judge for Civil Matters in Twelfth Judicial District|
NEW YORK – Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau today announced the appointment of Hon. Douglas E. McKeon as Administrative Judge for Civil Matters in the Twelfth Judicial District. The appointment was made with the approval of Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and after consultation with Presiding Justice Luis A. Gonzalez of the Appellate Division, First Department. Judge McKeon succeeds Hon. Barry Salman, who has reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. Hon. Richard Lowe will replace Judge McKeon as Presiding Justice of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the First Judicial Department.
In announcing the appointment, Judge Pfau said, “Judge McKeon is an outstanding candidate to take on the critical role of Administrative Judge. As Presiding Justice of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the First Judicial Department, he has been both an exceptional jurist and a stellar administrator – qualities that make him ideally suited to handle the challenges of his new position. I am pleased that Judge McKeon has accepted this important assignment.”
Hon. Douglas E. McKeon was appointed Presiding Justice of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the First Judicial Department in 2006. He was elected to the Supreme Court in the Bronx in 1990 and, prior to that, served as a judge in the New York City Civil Court. After earning his Juris Doctor from New York Law School, Justice McKeon served as a law clerk to two United States District Court judges for the Southern District of New York. He was in the private practice of law with a specialization in trial and appellate practice, and served as Associate Counsel to the Speaker of the New York State Assembly, as well as a member of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. Justice McKeon has been honored for his judicial excellence by the Bronx Bar Association, the Jewish Lawyers Guild, the Brehon Law Society and The Defense Association of New York. He has lectured throughout the country at legal seminars and authored several articles in legal publications.
Judge Pfau added, “I am sincerely grateful to Judge Salman for his work as Administrative Judge for the last five years. He is a longstanding and highly respected member of the Bronx legal community, admired for his diligence, scholarly knowledge of the law and commitment to public service. I wish him the best in all of his future endeavors.”
Chief Judge Ann Pfau also announced that Hon. Robert Torres has been appointed Associate Justice of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court, First Judicial Department. The appointment was made after consultation with Hon. Luis A. Gonzalez, Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department. Judge Torres fills a vacancy arising from the 2009 appointment of Hon. Sherry Klein Heitler as Administrative Judge of the Supreme Court, Civil Term, New York County.
Judge Torres’s appointment is effective immediately. Judge McKeon’s and Judge Lowe’s respective appointments are effective January 1, 2011.
