Representing Yourself - The Help Center

If you are, or may be, a party to a legal case in our court that is significant to you, financially or in other ways, we strongly suggest that you consult an attorney to determine fully legal rights and remedies. If you wish to do so, however, you have the right to represent yourself in this court. (A corporation, though, must appear by an attorney. CPLR 321.) The court is not allowed to offer legal advice to anyone. That is the role of the attorney. The court cannot substitute for an attorney if a person does not have one. The court's role is to be neutral between or among the parties to a lawsuit and to decide cases on the facts and the law, fairly, efficiently, without fear or favor.

The court can provide information to attorneys and the general public about how the court functions, the forms it requires, its administrative offices, and similar matters. Our web site is designed to do this. So are many other efforts undertaken by us to communicate with attorneys and the public. For those who are contemplating, or currently are, representing themselves in our court, we provide forms and information through our Help Center (Room 116, at 60 Centre Street, hours: 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.).

If you have any questions about representing yourself in our court  or how our court functions and are unable to discuss them with an attorney,  you are strongly urged to consult the staff in the Office.
