Most NYS Court job titles are grouped into a "job series." Employees may advance within a job series through the examination and interview process. Promotional opportunities are also available by moving to different job series.

COURT OPERATIONS

NYS Courts employees provide support for courtroom operations in fields such as court security, court interpreting and court reporting. Employees also assist court operations by issuing court rulings, court orders, notices and forms; supervising, assigning and training staff; processing court documents, filings and exhibits presented in court; operating automated case management recording systems and other technologies, and interacting with the public and court users.

COURT CLERK

Court clerks may be assigned to work in courtrooms or back-office support units where they perform a variety of tasks, including calling the calendar, preparing written correspondence and examining court documents to ensure accuracy.

COURT INTERPRETER

Court Interpreters provide spoken and sign language access by converting words and concepts expressed in the spoken English language into another language and vice versa  in the courtroom and other settings.  They also provide sight translation of documents.

COURT REPORTER

Court Reporters are responsible for the verbatim recording and transcribing of testimony in the courts.

COURT SECURITY

Court Officers are highly trained law enforcement professionals responsible for the security and protection of judges, court employees and the public in courthouses and court facilities throughout the state.

OFFICE CLERICAL SUPPORT

Office clericals perform a variety of clerical and administrative support tasks, including checking, sorting and filing court papers, carrying out keyboarding functions and other general office work.

 

OTHER COURT OPERATIONS PROFESSIONALS

PROBLEM SOLVING COURT SPECIALISTS - Social Workers & Case Management Coordinators

Problem Solving Court Specialists establish and maintain relationships with community service providers, act as courtroom representatives for problem solving parts, develop treatment plans, determine intervention services, counsel participants, prepare written reports/recommendations, and maintain case files.  They require knowledge of social work techniques and procedures.

LAW LIBRARIANS AND LAW LIBRARY SUPPORT TITLES

Law Librarians provide a variety of professional library services including maintaining and evaluating library systems and performing legal research.

Law Library Technical Assistants, Law Library Assistants and Law Library Clerks work in law libraries supporting library services, perform clerical duties in a law library and assist law library patrons with legal references.

LEGAL SERIES

The New York State Court System has one of the largest caseloads in the nation. Attorneys are an integral part of the court system and represent approximately a quarter of the non-competitive workforce. Attorneys work statewide providing legal assistance and legal services to judges, the court system and court clients. Attorneys typically work in one of three settings in the legal series.

LEGAL SERIES

• COURT ATTORNEY: As part of a legal team or law department researching and analyzing legal issues from civil and criminal cases in trial courts and the appellate  courts 

• ATTORNEY: As part of a legal team or law department providing legal research and advocacy services in the Mental Hygiene Legal Services (MHLS), attorney disciplinary committees and Article 18B panel administration units 

• LAW CLERK TO JUDGE: As Law Clerk to Judge assisting individual judges with legal research and analysis and drafting decisions, orders and opinions

ADMINISTRATION & TECHNOLOGY

Employees in administration support court operations by providing technical assistance and research and analysis in specialized fields such as human resources, finance and budget management, facilities management and information technology services. Many of the employees in court administration work in the following titles:

ANALYST TITLES

Court Analysts may be assigned to work with special project teams or initiatives and perform confidential analysis, research, planning, assemble comprehensive reports and other related duties in one or more of the following areas: budget development and court finance; personnel and human resources administration; resource allocation; and court system management and administration.

TECHNOLOGY TITLES

Technology staff perform a wide variety of tasks including applications programming, network and systems analysis, user training, and computer maintenance.
