Candidates are required to attend the NYS Court Officers Academy and complete
a 14-week law enforcement training program, followed by further training at the assigned work site.
The NYS Court Officers Academy also operates a training center located in Cohoes, NY, near Albany.
Training includes, but is not limited to:
- physical training and defensive tactics
- communication skills
- conflict resolution
- emergency evacuation procedures
- fire safety
- field training
- prisoner handling
- arrest procedures
- baton and pepper spray use
- basic firearms
- CPR and basic first aid
- magnetometer/x-ray procedures
- criminal procedure law
- other specialized training
Candidates will undergo daily physical fitness routines
and are regulary assessed and tested.
Upon graduation,
candidates are certified as peace officers of the State of New York.
During the two year traineeship, each recruit is required to return to the Academy for additional in-service training including firearms training which is conducted at NYS Court System firing ranges located throughout the state. |
