Overview

A County Court is located in each county of the State (outside of New York City).  County Court handles the prosecution of all crimes committed within the county.  It has exclusive authority to handle trials in felony matters and shares authority with the local city, town and village courts to handle trials in misdemeanor cases  and other minor offenses and violations.  County Court also has the limited authority to hear civil cases involving monetary awards of $25,000.00 or less.  County Court also acts as an appellate court for civil and criminal appeals from the town and village courts and for criminal, civil, and small claims (under $25,000.00) matters from city court.
