Associate Justice John T. Buckley

JUDICIAL EXPERIENCE:
Designated on January 1, 2007, by Governor Spitzer as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department.

Designated on March 11, 2003, by Governor Pataki as Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department (March 11, 2003 - December 31, 2006)

Designated on March 14, 2002, by Governor Pataki as a Constitutional Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department.

Designated on March 4, 1999, by Governor Pataki as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department.

Supreme Court Justice, 5th Judicial District
(Elected in 1994, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga and Oswego Counties), presiding at civil and criminal trials in Oneida, Onondaga and New York Counties.

Oneida County Court Judge
Elected in 1979, and re-elected in 1989 without opposition (1980-1994), presiding at felony criminal trials in Oneida, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and civil appeals from City Courts and Town and Village Justice Courts.

LEGISLATIVE EXPERIENCE:
A Member of the Assembly (116th A.D. Oneida County) for six years (1967-1972), having been elected to three terms, and not having sought election to a fourth term.

LAW PRACTICE:
Eighteen years experience in private practice, six years with Kernan and Kernan, Utica, New York (1962-1967) and twelve years with Buckley & Scholl, Utica, New York (1968-1979).

JUDICIAL ASSOCIATIONS:
Association of Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York
Member; Legislative Chair (2000-2003); Co-Chairman of the Task Force on Court Reform (1997-2002). Elected President in 2003.

The Association of County Court Judges of the State of New York
Legislative Chair (1984-1987); President (1986-1988).

Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., lecturer in several elective courses on Constitutional Law and Criminal Law issues, in 1996, 1993, 1986 and 1985.

New York State Associated Press Association, Albany, N.Y., lecturer at seminar on “Covering the Courts” and “Gaining Access” in 1990.

EDUCATION:
Georgetown University (B.S. 1958), scholarship, honors in comprehensive oral exam in major (History) and elected Junior Class Secretary and Treasurer of the Yard (student body).

Albany Law School (LLB 1961), scholarship, Evidence Prize, President of class each year, manager of law school bookstore, delegate to Annual Meeting of National Student Bar Association and clerk for the late State Senator Fred J. Rath.

University of Virginia, School of Law, scholarship (Master of Laws in Judicial Process 2004).

MILITARY SERVICE:
In 1961 entered the U.S. Army Reserves as a Private E-2, active duty with 322nd MP (CID) Unit, served with 414th Civil Affairs, Military Government Company, discharged as Captain, JAG Corp.

PERSONAL:
Born on February 8, 1936, Utica, NY, married, two children.
